Welcome to EFA News dear advocates and partners,

Our #EFACommunity has had an especially impactful few weeks of advocacy and collaboration. At the 48th Codex Committee on Food Labelling meeting in Quebec, Sabine Schnadt from EFA’s German member DAAB and I brought the patients’ perspective to the global discussions shaping international food allergen labelling standards.

We also celebrated the publication of "10 practical priorities to prevent and manage serious allergic reactions: GA2LEN ANACare and EFA Anaphylaxis Manifesto." Co-authored by #EFACommunity, it highlights key priorities for preventing and managing anaphylaxis, including the urgent need for mandatory precautionary allergen labelling (PAL).

For lung health, asthma and COPD, we marked the updated EU recommendations for smoke and aerosol-free environments, providing national patient communities in the EU with a roadmap to demand stronger protections in public areas to #KeepBreathing.

In Brussels, the #EFACommunity Committee Meeting explored ideas for collaboration and patient empowerment while planning the 2025 Annual General and Community Meeting in Ljubljana.

Thank you all for your continued support. Let’s continue working together and stronger in 2025!

Wishing you a restful end to the year,

Marcia Podestà
EFA President

EFA response to EMA’s public consultation on handling competing interests of patient experts

EFA responded to European Medicines Agency (EMA)’s consultation on their draft policy for handling competing interests of patient experts involved in the work of the agency. While we support a transparent approach, we also warn EMA against excluding patients due to their collaboration with industry. Patient input is essential for medicines to truly reflect real needs, striking the right balance when choosing individual experts would ensure patient expertise improves treatments and improves quality of life.

New report on the environmental determinants of chronic respiratory disease in Europe

The European Environment Agency recently released a new report "Beating chronic respiratory disease: the role of Europe’s environment". Fully in line with EFA's position, the report provides solid evidence on the link between factors such as air pollution, second-hand smoke or allergen pollens and respiratory disease.
